Are aluminium bifold doors worth the price?

The appeal of bifold doors has been well-publicised in recent years.

Whether you dream of an unobstructed sunrise view from the comforts of your sofa, letting an entire wall’s worth of fresh air into your home, or benefiting from more natural light in your home, these folding doors are well worth the hype.

Several factors impact their overall cost, ranging from the material chosen to the number of panels and glazing selected, but in general, aluminium bifolds are likely to set you back roughly £2,800 – £7,500 for a standard set as per Checkatrade figures. This covers supply and professional installation.

uPVC bifolds come in a fair bit cheaper at around £2,000 to £4,500 fitted, but as we’ll explain, you’re getting a different proposition for your money.

Let’s break it all down so you can decide whether aluminium bifolds are the best option for your home.

Aluminium bifold door cost in 2026

As we touched on above, according to Checkatrade’s bifold door cost guide which is also in-line with our pricing at Doncaster Trade Windows, aluminium bifold doors typically sit between £3,000 and £7,500 installed for standard configurations in 2026. Here’s a rough breakdown:

  • 2-panel compact opening: £3,000 – £4,500
  • 3-panel standard setup: £3,500 – £6,500
  • 4-panel larger opening: £5,000 – £8,500
  • 5–6 panel full-width opening: £7,000 – £15,000+

So why are they such a popular choice with UK homeowners? Aluminium frames are incredibly strong but lightweight, which means slimmer sightlines, more glass and bigger panel sizes than you can get with other frame materials. Modern properties love that contemporary look, but they also work beautifully on traditional homes when finished in the right colour.

As for how they open, the panels are hinged together and run along a track at the top and bottom. When you push them open, the panels concertina (or “fold”) neatly to one side, stacking up against the outer frame. You can have a traffic door built in too when you choose Doncaster Trade Windows, so you don’t need to open the whole lot just to nip outside.

What drives the cost of aluminium bifold doors?

A handful of factors influence the overall cost. Knowing what they are helps you budget sensibly and avoid surprises.

Frame materials and system quality

Aluminium costs more than uPVC because of its strength, durability and slimmer profiles. Premium systems also include thermal breaks (a strip of insulating material inside the frame that stops heat escaping from inside to outside), giving you excellent thermal values.

Number of panels and door size

Every extra panel adds roughly £1,000 – £2,000 to aluminium bifolds. Larger openings need stronger tracking, more glass and more labour.

Glazing specification

Double glazing comes as standard. Upgrades like triple glazing, solar control glass (which reflects heat from the sun to keep rooms cooler in summer) or acoustic glass can add 15-25% to glazing costs.

Colour and finish

Standard finishes typically cost less, with woodgrain options available, but often pushing the bottom line up slightly.

Hardware and security

Premium handles, magnetic catches, flush thresholds and multi-point locking systems push the price up too, whether they’re worth it depends on your priorities.

Installation complexity

Slotting new doors into an existing opening is far cheaper than creating a new opening. If you need steel supports, brickwork alterations or replastering, labour costs typically range £600 – £1,200+. Properties in a conservation area may have additional requirements under building regulations too.

How does the cost of uPVC bifolds compare?

uPVC bifold doors cost roughly £2,000 – £4,500 installed, making them the more budget-friendly option. They’re cheaper because uPVC is less expensive to manufacture, and the frames are bulkier so you don’t get the same slim sightlines.

That said, uPVC bifolds are still brilliant. They’re low maintenance, offer cracking energy efficiency and look smart. But for larger openings, aesthetic appeal and long-term durability, aluminium is widely considered the better pick. The slimmer frames mean more glass, more natural light and a more contemporary finish.

What are the benefits of bifolds?

We’ve established that they look great, but here are a few more perks of bifold doors that you will benefit from on a daily basis:

Seamless garden access

Unlike traditional patio doors or French doors, bifolds open up an entire wall. Your kitchen, lounge or dining room becomes part of the garden if you want it to, and vice versa.

Floods of natural light

Slim aluminium frames mean huge expanses of glass. Even when closed, your home feels brighter and more open.

Panoramic external views

Because aluminium can support bigger panels with slimline sight lines, you get an almost uninterrupted view outside. uPVC frames are thicker, so you lose a bit of glass area.

Thermal performance and lower energy bills

Modern bifolds aren’t draughty. Our aluminium doors reach U-values as low as 1.1 W/m²K (the lower the U-value, the less heat loss), helping reduce energy costs year-round.

Added property value

New bifold doors are one of the home improvements that high-end buyers consistently look out for, which can have a positive impact on property value.
