If you’re starting to notice chilly draughts in your home, your energy bills creeping up, or the dreaded condensation between your double glazing panes, you’re probably asking – how long do windows last? For most homeowners, replacement windows are a “once in a lifetime” purchase. And, because they are a significant investment, it is important to make the right purchasing decisions to safeguard your home – and your pocket for the future.
At Doncaster Trade Windows, we have been fabricating and installing premium double and triple glazing across South Yorkshire since 2013. We know that the longevity of your windows depends principally on the material used and the quality of the installation, with the local weather conditions also contributing.
Built to last: comparing the lifespan of modern window materials
Not all window frames are created equal. The material you choose has the biggest impact on how many decades they will last.
- uPVC Windows: These are the most popular choice in the UK for a reason. Modern uPVC is highly durable and typically lasts between 20 and 35 years. Unlike older windows, today’s uPVC is designed not to discolour or become brittle under UV exposure.
- Aluminium Windows: Aluminium is incredibly robust. Because it does not rust or rot, aluminium windows can easily last 45 years or more. They are particularly effective in hilly South Yorkshire homes exposed to high winds, as the frames maintain their structural integrity over a long time.
- Timber Windows: The lifespan of wooden windows varies wildly based on the type of wood. Softwood frames might only last 20 years if neglected, and constantly battered by driving rain. High-quality hardwood windows or engineered timber windows though can last 50 years or more, provided they receive regular maintenance.

What affects window longevity?
While material is the baseline, external factors play a huge role. Timber windows will need regular sanding and repainting to fulfil their maximum lifespan. Windows on the south-facing side of a house deal with more sun damage, while those in exposed, hilly areas face more driving heavy rain, which can have a big impact.
The quality of the initial fitting is equally vital. A poorly installed window frame can lead to air leaks and water ingress within just a few years. This is why we focus on precision fabrication; a window that fits perfectly is a window that lasts.
Industry data suggests that a large number of premature window failures are caused by installation errors rather than material defects. At Doncaster Trade Windows we take full control of the manufacturing process by fabricating our uPVC windows and doors in-house at our Doncaster facility.
For our more specialised home improvement products, including composite doors, aluminium systems, and tiled conservatory roofs, we partner with a select group of industry suppliers. Each partner is chosen because they consistently meet our rigorous quality standards, ensuring you receive a high-performance product every time.
Is it time for new windows? Signs you could be saving on energy bills
How do you know when your old windows have reached the end of the road? Look out for these “red flag” symptoms:
- Condensation between panes: If you see fogging inside the double glazing, the seal has failed. This means the insulating gas has escaped, and the window is no longer providing energy efficiency.
- Draughts and rattles: If you can feel a breeze even when the window is locked, the frame has likely warped or the seals have perished.
- Difficulty operating: If you have to fight with a handle to open or close the sash, the internal mechanisms are failing, which can also become a security risk.
- Rising energy costs: If your heating is working harder than usual, your windows might be the ‘weakest link” letting out all the warmth from your home.
Even if your windows appear to be in good condition, double glazing installed in the 1990s or early 2000s is likely reaching the end of its functional lifespan. While these units were a major improvement over single glazing at the time, the leap in thermal performance offered by today’s technology is substantial. Replacing 20 to 30-year-old units can transform your home’s comfort and significantly reduce energy consumption.
The improved efficiency of modern replacement windows is driven by three core advancements:
- Drastic reduction in U-values
Windows from 25 years ago typically have U-values of 3.0 W/m²K or higher. In contrast, current building regulations require new installations to achieve 1.4 W/m²K or lower. This means modern windows are more than twice as effective at retaining heat, especially when opting for ‘A’ rated units or triple glazing.
- Evolution of glass technology
Older double glazing usually consisted of two standard panes of glass with ordinary air trapped between them. Modern units utilise a combination of low-E coatings and argon gas fill (the gap between panes is filled with argon gas, which is better than air at slowing down heat transfer).
- Insulated spacer bars
Older windows utilised aluminium spacer bars to separate the glass panes. Because aluminium is a conductor these carried the cold from the outside directly to the inner pane. Modern units use warm-edge spacer bars made of insulating composites, effectively eliminating this cold bridge and reducing condensation at the glass edges.

Protecting your investment: how to make your windows last longer
You can certainly help your windows reach the upper end of their life expectancy with a little care. For uPVC and aluminium, this simply means cleaning the frames with soapy water and lubricating the hinges and locking points once a year. For wood windows, it involves repainting or re-staining every few years to prevent moisture from seeping into the wooden frames.
Repair vs replacement: what’s best?
Sometimes, a simple repair is enough. Blown glass panes can often be replaced without changing the entire frame, and handles can be swapped out easily. However, if the window frame itself is damaged, rotting, or warped, a full window replacement is the only way to restore your home’s thermal performance.
